Our Mission: Building a community of heroes who provide hope, guidance and support to children with cancer and their families.
Our Vision: To make fighting childhood cancer a journey a family never faces alone.
Here are some of our programs:
*Heroes Bags and Backpacks
We provide backpacks and tote bags to families with a child who has been diagnosed with cancer and is being
treated at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. The tote bags and backpacks are
intended to help families through this time of crisis and relieve some of
the strain and stress during this difficult time in their lives. Please click here to learn more about our program and to view a "wish list" of items. Heroes Bags and Backpacks. *Superheroes and Sidekicks
Connor's Heroes is excited to announce its newest program, called Superheroes and Sidekicks . This program is designed to ease the burdens of treatment by pairing community volunteers with children who are battling cancer, their siblings and their parents. Each of these groups can benefit from friendship, support and companionship. Kids that are fighting cancer not only feel sick and endure tremendous pain and suffering, they also fight isolation from friends, low self-esteem, and the boredom of long, arduous hours of clinic and hospital treatments. Kids are limited in their ability to play due to suppressed immune systems and treatments, and having a supportive, compassionate friend there throughout their treatments goes a long way. Pairing teens and adults with kids during their cancer journey will help them through the toughest of times, and let them just be kids again. S&S will treat kids to quality time with a mentor who will spend time with them at clinic, the hospital, home, or at any number of special events to play, do crafts, catch a movie or a ballgame, ride a bike, go for a walk or just hang out together. *Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Support
Connor's Heroes also assists pediatric patients on the Bone Marrow
Transplant Unit at the Massey Cancer Center by decorating the rooms
before the patient arrives, providing gifts on the day of transplant and day of release, and by providing volunteers to sit and visit with
the patients so that the patient's mother and/or father can have time to
be with their other children. Connor's Heroes
also funds the Jamie Hess Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Fund at the
VCU Massey Cancer Center.
*Pediatric Cancer Research Endowment Fund
Connor's Heroes established this Fund in the Department of Pediatrics at the VCU School of Medicine
and VCU Massey Cancer Center. The endowment will be used exclusively
to support pediatric cancer research with the ultimate goal of recruiting
a nationally recognized pediatric cancer researcher.
*C4 -- Childhood Cancer Community Consortium
Connor's Heroes helped establish this group, whose mission is to unite the unique talents and skills of the various childhood cancer organizations to collectively provide the best, most comprehensive care and services for children with cancer and their families in the Greater Richmond area. The C4 website has a great resource book for children with cancer and their families and also a calendar of all upcoming events. Visit www.c4va.org to learn more.
We hope to capture some of Connor's enthusiasm for life, and for conquering childhood cancer, through the Connor's Heroes Foundation. Connor is very eager to tell people how important it is for everyone to be a hero by raising money to help find a cure for kids with cancer, and also how important it is for kids with cancer to be able to have fun, not just feel sick. If we can bring the energy to Connor's Heroes that Connor brings to living every day, then conquering childhood cancer is only a matter of time!
